The R.O.C.

You should know by now that this girl lives for hip-hop culture! As a youngin, I would always get excited whenever my parents went to the grocery store because while they shopped, I’d spend hours in the magazine aisle reading the latest issue of The Source, XXL, and VIBE magazine (back when it was poppin). I’d still buy them even after going through each page. I was fascinated by each campaign for that’s how I got introduced to urban fashion brands such as Baby Phat, Phat Farm, Avirex, South Pole, Coogi, etc. One brand that stuck out to me was Rocawear, owned by rapper Jay-Z as well as hip-hop mogul Dame Dash. I remember watching the video for Hard Knock Life on RapCity and being so captivated by Jay-Z’s delivery and effortless swag.

Jay-Z was known for his swag, let’s be honest! From his infamous Roc chain, colored durags, his extensive collection of sports jerseys, all the way to rocking his own brand, Rocawear, that he launched with Dash back in 1999. It wasn’t until the early 2000’s when the brand took off. Naomi Campbell, Aaliyah, DJ Khaled, Ciara, Victoria Beckham, Three 6 Mafia and Chris Brown have all been spotted in the latest Rocawear threads. The first Rocawear garment I owned was in high school and I remember it down to a T. I was on the computer surfing Dr.Jays, I came across a red and gold plaid Rocawear hoodie with the gold Rocawear logo embroidered on the left breast.  It had a matching shirt and coincidentally, my parents were going to New York that same week. I begged them to search the city to find these gems.  I remember coming home to both the hoodie and shirt laid out on my bed (shoutout Mom and Dad). After crying tears of happiness, I showed up to school the next day wearing both Rocawear pieces with a pair of gold Salt-N-Pepa hoop earrings. I felt confident, liberated and as you can see, that moment definitely contributed to how I dress today.

Rocawear was more than just a urban fashion brand. Jay-Z applied the style that he saw growing up in the streets of Bed Stuy, and brought it to the mainstream thanks to numerous campaigns, runway shows and of course, his swag. Jay-Z’s style, music, and multiple business ventures will forever remain influential for he overcome numerous challenges to gain his longevity being a rapper and an entrepreneur. Like he said in Dead Presidents, “My life aint rosy, but I roll wit it.”

For today’s look, I wanted to pay homage to the man himself by blessing ya’ll with some hip-hop fashion nostalgia. I hit up the thrift store with my homie a week back and came across a men’s Rocawear denim jacket for dirt cheap. It was a win-win situation and I just couldn’t say no. I guess you could say it was all good just a week ago (get it?)! I wanted to apply Jay-Z’s demeanor into this look for he was known for bein cocky on the mic. When you’re Jay-Z and you got 12 albums, a net worth of 900 million and married to the hottest chick in the game, you’d be cocky too! I kept the look fresh by pairing the jacket with a white crop top, gold and silver jewelry while topping it off with a pair of Air Jordan 4 Retro “Pure Money” sneakers.
