As I relax peacefully by the window this Thursday overlooking the city of Toronto, the lyrics to Tupac’s Life Goes On come to an end on Spotify. The next song takes me back to 1994 with  Aaliyah’s Back And Forth track. Fifteen years ago, on August 25th 2001, a small plane carrying singer Aaliyah, crashed and caught fire in the Bahamas after wrapping up the superstar’s video for Rock the Boat. I will never forget where I was when I heard the tragic news involving her death. It was in a hotel room in Drumheller with my parents and I was playing Super Mario Kart on my purple Gameboy when ET’s Mary Hart delivered the news on the television screen. I was immediately heartbroken for Aaliyah was a woman who influenced me heavily not only with her music, but also being true to herself in an industry that is known for selling the souls of artists at a high price. She blessed R&B lovers in 1994 with her debut album titled Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number and continued to do so with One In A Million and the self titled Aaliyah I immediately became enamoured by her ability to embrace her tomboy style but at the same time, add that hint of sexy. I was always afraid to rock baggy attire for I believed that it took away from my femininity for a lot of girls in my school embraced the slim-fitted attire. It wasn’t until I seen Aaliyah rock oversized Hilfiger jeans, Timberland boots and chic bandeau tops while owning her look with a smile. To this day, I still emulate her tomboy style and apply it to my everyday attire. The shirt worn above pays tribute to the Queen of R&B with her face on the front while her first name and year of birth are displayed gracefully on the back. Aaliyah will forever be a one in a million and our love for her goes on and on and on. Even though she is no longer with us, her style as well as her legacy will forever be imitated but never duplicated.  In the words of DMX,  Aaliyah,  “I love you, and I miss you.”
