Fashionable Friend Feature : M A L U

Ever since I decided to become the seven letter word (blogger, in case you forgot), I have come in contact with a few bloggers from the city whether it was at a fashion show, fundraiser, or just simply walking through these Edmonton streets. I remember sitting at my desk creeping Aleali May’s blog , it was post 061 to be exact. As I scrolled past photos of Aleali’s black Vetements ankle boots, another blogger had commented on the post prior to mine. After posting my comment about how Aleali’s Vetements footsies were a dream, I spontaneously clicked on the bloggers name. I was then directed to a site where the name MUSE x MALU written across the top. Her name is Melissa and she resides in Arizona but dreams of New York. After scrolling down to see what this girl Melissa was all about, I instantly became enamoured by her ability to slay in the most simple pieces known to man, or woman in this case. I instantly got a Karla Deras vibe from her simply cause her outfit shots are done so effortlessly. Honest to God, I got shots of inspiration running through my veins from looking at her outfit shots along with her knowledge in streetwear fashion. After following her on Instagram instantaneously and spamming her account with likes and comments, I have found a new muse. A muse named Malu that is! I wanted to know more about Melissa in areas of fashion inspiration, Supreme knowledge, blogger muses and her thoughts on the blogging community since its all you see on social media.  She is not only a blogger but also a freelance stylist who has big dreams of becoming a stylist and when she does, girl better make a trip down and style me. She  could probably style you, and your life for that matter. Check out my interview with Melissa below and please familiarize yourself with Melissa and the slayage that follows her at

1.) Tell me about yourself:

My birth name is Melissa, but I like to go by Malu.  I was born in NY, raised in Arizona, but hope to live in NY one day.  I am working on getting my Bachelors Degree in Art & Design at ASU, and my dream is to be a stylist.  Editorials are my favorite, so I have started to go towards being an editor for a fashion magazine, but we’ll see what happens.

2.) Describe your personal style in 3 words:

Edgy, Impulsive, & Daring

3.) Where did your appreciation for fashion come from?

I think my appreciation for fashion came about in a variety of ways.  I loved clothes since I was young, and I remember always stealing my oldest sister’s clothes from her closet so I could wear them to school, because I thought hers were so much cooler than mine.  She always had the best pieces, so I would always look up to her for inspiration.  I would also see kids at my school dressed in certain outfits and remember being inspired by what they wore.  Another place that had a big influence on my appreciation for fashion was definitely TV shows. I watched every season of America’s Next Top Model as a kid and it was always so interesting to me to see this part of the world that revolved around clothing.  That’s So Raven used to be my shit too, because in the show, Raven Symone dreamed of being a fashion designer, and so it made me want to be a designer at the time. As I got older, I started watching shows like Sex and the City and remembered falling in love with fashion even more.

4.) Who are your fashion influences?

I feel like there are so many, but main ones are Rihanna, Aleali May, Gilda Ambrosio, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Pharrell Luka Sabbat and A$AP Rocky, Did I mention Rihanna already?

5.) Who are your blogger influences?
Some of my blogger influences are Karla Deras of Karla’s Closet, Aleali May of Aleali May blog (obsessed with everything she does), Jennifer Grace of Native Fox, and Yanin Namasonthi of I Dress Myselff
6.) What is one staple piece that every fashion lover should have in their closet?
One?! You’re killing me here! haha I would say one staple piece that every fashion lover should have in their closet is honestly a t-shirt.  They never go out of style, and they are always on trend no matter what the season is, they just work!  You can wear them with anything, and you can dress them both up or down with your look.  I can’t think of one time they have let me down, plus, you can style it so many ways. Go crazy!
7.) What are your thoughts on the blogger community? Especially in our generation of social media.
Well for starters, the blogger community is huge now, especially with social media being such a popular way to connect with people.  It started with only a handful (i.e. Bryan Boy and Chiara Ferragni), back in 2009, so it was different for them when they began.  They are actually lucky to have been some of the firsts, because the blogger community was extremely lucrative, and they were fortunate enough to get first dibs on it, which is cool, but now that it’s 2016 I would assume that it is more difficult for newer bloggers to shine because there are so many of us.  Although, I do like the community and I have been fortunate to meet so many new people from it.

8.) If you could visit any fashion capital in the world, where would you go?
That is so hard, but I would have to say Milan, and I made this decision keeping the food in mind.  One of my favorite foods is italian, so that was a given! I can shop, plus eat good, and there is nothing that would make me happier than a combination of both.

9.) Malu is your nickname, tell me the background story behind the name?
I have been called Malu all of my life, mainly from my family members.  My mom started calling me that, and I don’t really think she even knows where she got it from, but I’m pretty sure its Hawaiian lol.  It’s sort of a Haitian thing to make up nicknames for everybody I feel like, so I always went with it. Then once my friends would come around, they would hear it, and then started calling me that too. From that point, it was a name that I associated with myself by everybody. It is also a part of where my blog’s name and how it originated. Plus, Melissa sounds so basic, and one of my best friend’s name is also Melissa, so it’s just easier to go by something else more original.
10.) What advice do you have for someone aspiring to make it into the fashion world?
Honestly, I am still trying to figure it all out for myself, because I just changed my major just eight months ago from Nursing.  Although, I can say from my experience thus far from a blogger and overall career standpoint would be to never give up and believe in yourself, which sound very cliche, but it’s true.  You can’t expect anything to be easy because if it was everybody would do it. I think it is important to be patient with your journey, and believe that one day it will happen for you at the right time.  I mean, I am taking my own advice here because I am nowhere where I want to be yet.  It is also important that you take risks, and make sure you are doing what you love, because if your not, you won’t be happy.  Just do what makes you happy and it will all work itself out!
11.) You did a blog post on the Supreme x Vans collaboration from early March, where did your appreciation for streetwear come from?
This answer is in it’s name, which is the street. I lived in Tucson when I moved from NY and lived there for 11 years, and streetwear was all I remember. You gain an appreciation for something that you are around often, and that was the case for me. I always had and appreciation for streetwear because I see it as being the most original and it really shows personal style.  Don’t get me wrong, high fashion is great, but you can connect to streetwear more because it is something you can wear on a day-to-day basis. How many people do you run into wearing haute couture down the street? It just doesn’t happen because it isn’t practical for people to do. Not only that, but streetwear is the most functional, but still gives off a cool and effortless vibe.  I wouldn’t be wearing an oversized tee with Nike Cortez’s or Air Force’s every day. I also love that high fashion street wear has become a thing, from brands like Off-White and Vetements.  It’s nice to see the fashion industry is finally beginning to embrace it.
12.) You’re quite active on social media, Instagram preferably, how has social media influenced your creativity?
Social media I think has influenced everybody and everything.  I’m was born in a generation where I saw everybody go from having pagers to flip phones and then smart phones. Social media began during my generation, but I still remember being around when we didn’t have it at all, so the changes are huge.  I think social media influenced me because you can see what everybody is up to with a click of a button.  I can follow my fashion icons, and see what they are wearing everyday or get updates on what is going on in the fashion world, its crazy!
13.) How do you deal with criticism?
I would say that I take criticism pretty well.  I think at times it can bring you down, but you always have to keep in mind that it is a good tool for improvement in whatever you are doing. It is good to hear about anything you are doing whether it is good or bad, that way it can allow you to grow.
14.) What’s the movement for you this year?
I am really just focusing on building my styling portfolio, consistently releasing content for my blog, and meeting and working with local people. Networking is always important and I  have already found that to be true within the past year. Also, I just want to focus on myself and working towards my goals, and most importantly, keeping a positive mindset.  Major key.
15.)  How do you style your life?
I style my life through my blog, Muse x Malu, as one of my main tools. It’s a great way for me to express myself about various topics in fashion, and through my personal style. Whether you like it or not, our appearance that is one of the first things people see when they look at you and yes, it sounds very narcissistic, but it’s true. I like to always look presentable and I love that I have the freedom to wear what you want and how I want is cool too.
16.) Provide your social media platforms (Twitter/Instagram/Tumblr):
Twitter: @miss_maluuu
Facebook: Muse x Malu
Instagram: @musexmalu
