BREAKING NEWS: as of 12 hours ago, Drake finally dropped his fourth studio album VIEWS (originally Views From The 6), and holy shit did the internet go crazy! Every tweet, Instagram caption, Facebook status and Snapchat captions became congested with all things VIEWS. I guess when you’re Drake and you haven’t released an album in 3 years, the culture reacts quite strongly. Drake blessed listeners with a twenty song track list and I can assure you, I had a nervous breakdown when I heard the news. Two days prior to the album, Drake tweeted the cover for the album showing the rapper perched on the edge of the CN Tower in Toronto and of course, the internet questioned whether or not the rapper was photo shopped at the top because really, even if he had keys to the 6, I doubt they would let him sit up there. Didn’t need the official CN Tower Twitter page to tell us that….
At about 9:30 pm on Thursday, I received a Snapchat notification from a fellow homie saying that VIEWS hit the airwaves and of course, I grabbed my earphones, threw on my Hotline Bling sweater and prepared my ears for some musical slayage. The album started off slow with Keep The Family Close , 9 and U With Me? then quickly descends into hype tracks such as Hype, Faithful ft the late Pimp C, a remastered version of Controlla, Grammy’s, Pop Style and Too Good. Near the end, Drake closes VIEWS by serenading us with melodic tracks such as Fire & Desire, Views and of course closes it with the oh-so popular Hotline Bling.
In terms of production, a lot of familiar faces lent their sound to VIEWS such as Kanye West, 40, Boi-1da, Murda Beatz, Maneesh and Nineteen85. Drake went a different route and applied a more “Toronto” sound with reggae-inspired tracks such as Controlla and One Dance. Been trying to reach Caribana this year in Toronto so those two tracks will set the mood perfectly! The biggest critique I have is the the fact that fellow Jamaican artist Popcaan was removed from Controlla, therefore making the track sound less island-like (just an opinion). Features were kept subtle with appearances by well known artists like Rihanna, PartyNextDoor, Future and Pimp C. Thanks to VIEWS, Wizkid & Kyla along with DVSN are artists that I’ll be watching out for cause really, if Drake features you on his album, the floodgates become open for musical opportunity.
Drake managed to stay true to his hometown with lyrics such as “I turn the six upside down, it’s a nine now” in 9 and Grammy’s which you’ll most likely hear at the club on both a Friday and Saturday. Overall, VIEWS is a solid album but in terms of progression in Drake’s sound, the meter remains at a neutral stance. In terms of repeated tracks, 9, U With Me?, Hype, Fire & Desire, and Grammy’s are my top choices.
