This past weekend, I had the chance to attend the fifth instalment of a photography-based movement that is currently making waves in the heart of Edmonton, Alberta. Urban YEG is a community of photographers who have an eye for creativity and let their passion shine with each photo taken. Urban YEG organizer Chan Rin, would select a spot in the city for photographers to meet then roam different parts the city with cameras in hand. The first meet I attended, I used a Nikon Coolpix that had a broken screen and lens. It was borderline shitty. I was so insecure about using it for everyone around me had far more advanced cameras and actually had experience. A young man at the meet reassured me by saying “Its not what kind of camera you have, it’s what you can do with it.” Those words gave me the confidence to snap a few pics… until my camera died (grr!). I later invested in a DSLR camera and the rest became history. There hasn’t been a time where I haven’t left home without my camera for I am constantly inspired by pretty much anything from graffiti walls to modern structures. With the help of this meet, I got to meet photographers who were willing to share their stories about how they got into the game and what about the city inspires them. We even exchanged Instagram information! They gave me the push to start visually showcasing my creativity and even showed me what my camera can do outside the manual. I want to thank you all for helping me understand that not everyone is going to understand your creativity. Big ups to Chan for building a foundation where photographers can be themselves and shouldn’t have to ask if they are good enough. The truth is, you are all good enough! If you are in the Edmonton area and want to meet like-minded people who share the same passion for photography as you, I encourage you to attend an Urban YEG meet. The photos above are the ones I took from the meet and to tell you the truth, I couldn’t be happier with how they turned out. Oh, and thanks to everyone who modelled for me. Enjoy the vibe-rant pictures everyone!
