As some of you may or may not know, I started a new blog category called the Fashionable Friend Feature, its where I showcase my friends who not only have great taste in fashion, but have great taste when it comes to styling their lives. About once a month, I call up one of my peeps, snap a few photos of them followed by having them answer a series of fun questions. Everyone has a voice, plus a story, and why not create a place where they can share it. Since the month of March is coming to an end, I thought I’d keep the vibes going by featuring a lovely lady by the name of Maegan. The spelling of her name is so unique and it matches up to her persona with little effort. Her intellect digs deep along with her passion for shifting the culture all with a conscious mental state. With a background in International Studies, her words elude a strong passion for change with the help of her movement titled Generation Shift. The purpose of this movement is to shift the minds of the Edmonton youth and strengthen diverse community groups. There is no doubt Maegan is shifting the Edmonton culture, one vibe at a time. Read my interview with Maegan followed by a few snapshots of her seemingly effortless style during our afternoon date at the Alberta Art Gallery.
1. Who are you?
. My name is Maegan Robinson-Anagor
2. How old are you?
I’m 23 years old
3. Tell us about yourself
I was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. My parents both came here as young people to attend university at the University of Alberta, where they met. My mom is from Grenada and my dad is from Nigeria. I’m the youngest of 3, I have an older brother and an older sister. Currently I’m a Psychology and International Studies undergrad at the U of A. I’m a Libra and I know it sounds cliché but I embody my sign to a T, it’s kind of weird haha. Some of my hobbies include travelling, dancing, activism, reading and meeting new people. I’m also very interested in people, behaviour and culture. My passions include social justice, community development, and working with children and youth. I also love hip hop and R&B.
4. What are you up to?
Currently I’m organizing two youth conferences. One of them is for work, and involves a research project on youth engagement in Edmonton. The other is a little side project that’s very near and dear to my heart. The conference is called Generation Shift: Towards Gender Equity. Generation SHIFT is the group that’s organizing it, and our aim is to challenge current paradigms. We want to begin to help people to think in new and different ways in order to affect social change. We also intend to empower and encourage young people to use their innate power to affect change in their communities at all levels.
5. What is your current philosophy?
My current philosophy in life is positivity and openness. This year I aim to be more open and accepting of people and of situations. I’m a very chill person overall and have always been about going with the flow, however at this point in my life, I would like to get out there and take more risks. If you don’t put yourself out there, you close yourself off to a lot of different kinds of blessings. And you never know where life could take you, you know, so why not go along for the ride and the experience? I vow to not shy away from challenges or fear failure.
6. Describe your personal style in 3 words
7. I’m going to give you a word, tell me what it means to you: “vibes”
To me, when I hear “vibes”, I think “good vibes”. It’s a positive phrase, for the most part. When you’re “vibin’”, it means the flow is real and relaxed. The energy is on point. “Vibes” is all about how a person or place makes you feel. It’s just good energy and positive feelings.
8. What does it mean to “style your life?”
In my opinion, “style your life” means to take responsibility and to take control of your life in every aspect. It means to be courageous, dream big, and go after your goals and ambitions at full speed. To “style your life” means to build and style the life of your dreams. We’re so blessed to live in a country like Canada, with so many resources and beautiful possibilities around us. If you think you can do it, believe me… You can. You can do anything you set your mind to.
9. Favourite quote
I love quotes so my favourite one changes all the time haha. My favourite quote right now is one I saw on Tumblr
“I dream too much, and I don’t write enough, and I’m trying to find God everywhere.”
– Anis Mojgani
It kind of describes me.
10. Provide your social media platforms
Thank you Maegan for sharing your story, keep styling your life and spread those good vibes worldwide!
Style on! XO
