The Perks of Being a Blogger

Over the course of this year, I have looked back on my life and thought about the decisions I have made. Whether it was my choice in friends, education, job opportunities, etc. One of the greatest decisions I have made this year was to continue my journey as a blogger and to be not only more creative, but be more personal with my posts. This isn’t one of those posts where I discuss what I am wearing or which event I attended last week (which I did), I want to dig a little deeper and identify what it means to be a blogger and also list the benefits of being one.

Blog•ger (bläɡ-ger) : someone who writes content for a blog.

Pretty simple right?

But wait, what’s a blog?

Bl•og (bläɡ/) : an online journal or diary used for creative expression usually done in reverse chronological order. Whether it’s about fashion, finances, travel, social media, etc.

I originally thought that starting/creating/writing a blog allowed you to get your thoughts down and share with others what you know, but with blogging, lies a whole nother world that I never knew existed. I had a hard time expressing myself to others and was constantly afraid of what people thought of me when I expressed my views to the point where it got me paranoid. I’ve come to realize that it’s okay to express how you feel and you never know, maybe it will inspire the next person/reader. Enough about my personal issues, lets jump right into it! Besides expressing yourself, throughout the course of my journey as a blogger, there have been several benefits that come with the seven letter term and I am going to list them right here, right now.

1. You get to go to cool events:

You think I’m lying when you get to go to the top events in the city. From fashion shows to store openings to networking events. And all you have to say is ” I’m a blogger.” If you’re social media savy like me, try to follow local designers, boutiques, and fundraisers within your city and when you do, stay socially active with them. Send em a tweet, tag em on Instagram or hit that “Like” button on Facebook.

2. You meet creative people:

A creative mind is what makes a blog shine and touching base from the previous point, cool events equals cool people. From bloggers, musicians, photographers, to real estate agents.  It’s so nice to be in a room full of people with creative mindsets who are willing to share and feed ideas off one another. It also gives you the opportunity to socialize with other bloggers and ask questions. Thanks to the art of blogging, I have been fortunate enough to talk to fellow Edmonton bloggers and ask them how they got their start. Definitely a great way to meet new people!

3. It gives you an excuse to dress nice

This one is a given. If you’re a fashion blogger, you would want to dress the part because when you tell someone you are a fashion blogger, their eyes will make their way towards your #ootd. I’m not saying become the next Aimee Song or Vashtie Kola, but hey, you never know where you’ll end up. Believe me, dressing nice will take you very far. Holy Chic!

4. It gives you a voice

Touching base from the first point, I had a hard time expressing my thoughts and opinions for I feared that I would be looked down upon by others.  With the help of this blog, I learned that I not can not only express myself verbally, but mentally and physically. Whether it’s a stylish thought or an outfit of the day, it gives me a sense of acceptance and yes, it’s okay to step outside the box. Don’t let snarky comments in your comment box or criticism stop you from voicing your opinion. You have a voice, use it!

5. You get free stuff (well, sometimes)

During my time as a blogger, there have been numerous occasions where I dream of waking up to a parcel from NastyGal containing a free vintage Chanel bag with the leather tassel on my doorstep. Sigh! I have not yet received any free clothes, accessories, etc. But I do have a few swag bags lying around from previous events. If you want free merch, do a collaboration with a local designer within your city or work with a photographer who has your best interests and you can both share ideas. This is definitely one of my goals for the new year, anyone?

One of my many Nasty Gal purchases and no, it is not a Chanel bag… yet.

6. You got social media on your side

Whether its an outfit, thought, or what restaurant you ate at yesterday, the key is to SHARE! Thanks to media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Youtube, etc, its no wonder bloggers get so many likes on their posts. Personally I find that Instagram has been a savy sharing tool for my blog for it generates more likes and gives my followers a visual of what to expect in an upcoming post.
